Study Abroad in Honduras

Honduras shares borders with Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador. The country is home to the Bay Islands and spectacular coral reefs attracting scuba divers from everywhere. Historically, the Mayans were prevalent in some parts of the country and their influence continues today. Despite a stable political situation and low cost of living, Honduras is largely undiscovered by tourists. With a seemingly endless stretch of deserted beaches, jungles, mountains, and Mayan ruins, Honduras has much to offer.

Copan Ruins – Although the Mayan ruins of Copan are not as grand as those in Tikal, they boast more intricate and detailed carvings. Excavations and thrilling discoveries occur regularly.

Bay Islands – The islands of Roatan, Guanaja, and Utila are located about 30 miles off the north coast of Honduras. The coral reefs join those of Belize and offer great snorkeling and scuba diving.

Trujillo – The small town of Trujillo is near to where Colombus first set foot on the American mainland. The town was once a thriving port but today is known for pirate stories, beaches, coconut palms, gentle seas, and nearby Garifuna villages.

Mosquitia – This vast, inaccessible region in northeastern Honduras is inhabited by small groups of Miskito, Paya, and Sumo Indians. Travelers are attracted by the pristine wilderness and abundant wildlife, including manatees, monkeys, alligators, and fine bird life.

Tela – Many travelers' favorite Honduran Caribbean beach town. It is a small, quiet place, with superb seafood, several good places to stay, and some of the most beautiful beaches on the coast. There are plans to boost tourism in the area, but for now it remains unspoiled and quiet.
