Learning French abroad in Montreal, Canada is one of many language immersion programs offered by AmeriSpan. Canada is surrounded by the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans on each side, Alaska, Greenland, and the 'Lower 48' of the USA, and possesses a diverse landscape, ranging from the Arctic tundra of the north to the great wheatlands of the central area. Westward are the Rocky Mountains, and in the southeast the Great Lakes, the St Lawrence River and Niagara Falls. The country is divided into ten provinces and three territories with two official languages, English and French. Canada's French and British influences along with the mixture of many migrant traditions from all over the world make it a must see multi-cultural society.

The second-largest French-speaking city in the world, Montreal carries on the European tradition of keeping culture within the reach of the people. The main downtown part of Montreal lies between Mont Royal and Old Montreal, and is the heart of the business and shopping districts. A short walk out of the bustling downtown will take visitors back in time to the cobblestone streets, churches and unique old buildings of Old Montreal, which was the heart of the city until the end of the nineteenth century. Today, its charming buildings are filled with boutiques, bars and restaurants.

Montreal is well represented by many festivals which often include free admission for open-air events that keep the streets filled with music, laughter and creativity. The Montreal Jazz Festival and the Just For Laughs Festival are amongst the most well known. And it is always a festive occasion when the traveling circus troupe Cirque du Soleil returns home to Montreal with its mesmerizing crew of fire eaters, jugglers, acrobats, clowns and artists.

However, Montreal itself is a festival for all the senses. There are great restaurants varying from old world cuisine to storied delis and rib shacks. The 'real' Montreal, though, exists in neighborhoods that celebrate their ethnic origins like Little Italy and Chinatown, and especially the multicultural Plateau Mont-Royal. Boulevard St-Laurent is the city's most lively street, where the shops, bars and ethnic restaurants draw crowds until well into the night. Montreal's nightlife is legendary but is also well represented and balanced with the traditional manifestations of high culture- the symphony, opera and ballet.
