Company Background
The BeginningAt age 29, AmeriSpan's Co-Founder and President, John Slocum, and future business partner, Dorioara Pinku, ignored the advice of friends and family and took off to Latin America to study Spanish. During their 4-1/2 month trip, Slocum and Pinku noticed that the region was full of private language institutes offering affordable Spanish instruction. Surprisingly, the majority of students were not young co-eds but were lawyers, doctors, professionals and retirees interested in learning Spanish as quickly as possible. Moreover, the majority of participants were from Western Europe. The two realized that Spanish language travel programs were largely undiscovered in the USA at the time.Anxious to bring their knowledge of this kind of specialty travel to North America, Slocum and Pinku wrote out the first draft of a business plan on the beach in a small town north of Rio de Janeiro. Upon returning to the USA in January of 1993, they began a company temporarily called "Study Programs" to market Latin American language programs to travelers of all ages. In March of 1993, the company was incorporated and by then the official name and identity had been created, "AmeriSpan -- The Bridge Between Cultures."
TodaySince the very first student was sent in the spring of 1993, AmeriSpan has evolved from offering three Spanish schools in Latin America to offering over 15 languages in more than 45 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia and Africa. After nearly 20 strong years in the business, we are reinventing ourselves in many ways and making even more exciting changes. We launched our new and improved website providing more resources and program information then ever before. Our continued vision of offering "Every Language, Every Culture, Everywhere" has expanded our reach and variety of programs specialized for healthcare, education, academic, volunteer and internships and other professional development areas. Along with worldwide summer camps and junior immersion programs for teenagers, we offer a wealth of "Language and Fun" programs for those interested in adding classes in cooking, art, sailing, dance, history, culture and more to their language immersion programs.So why do so many choose to study with AmeriSpan? Tomorrow"Every Language, Every Culture, Everywhere" is our goal, but we aren’t there yet! We are continually expanding our program and language offerings.
