United Arab Emirates Overview

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a union of seven emirates or states each with its own unique character and personality, which was formed when the British withdrew from the Gulf in 1971. You can see cities with skyscrapers, a sophisticated network of highways dissecting the country, tree-lined boulevards, magnificent shopping malls, and beautiful parks, all side by side with the silent desert, wind towers and camels. Much has changed in a short period of time, creating an amazing juxtaposition of the traditional values of the East and the modern technologies of the West. This country is literally crime-free.

Camel Souk (Bazaar)- The Camel market, which is best seen on Fridays, is where camel dealers come from around the Gulf to buy and sell these racing animals.

Sharjah- The 3rd largest of the seven emirates, Sharjah is a place that often gets missed by visitors. It has some of the most interesting architecture in the country, the largest mosque in the UAE, an archeological museum, a small Disneyland, lots of watchtowers, a natural history museum- the best in the Gulf- bazaars to rival those in Dubai, and a traditional souk (or bazaar). It is also a great place to buy Persian rugs.

Ras al Khaimah- Approximately 60 miles north of Dubai, the northernmost state of Ras al Khaimah is one of the most beautiful spots in the country. This relaxing city has abundant greenery surrounded by sea, desert and mountains. Its attractions include an interesting museum, an atmospheric old town, souk, fishing port, and the best camel racing in the country. There are also several interesting archaeological sites nearby.

Desert Safaris or 'wadi bashing'- This activity involves whirling around the desert in a 4WD and can be organised in Dubai or Sharjah.
