Study Abroad in Tanzania

Study English Language & More

Situated in East Africa, TANZANIA, officially called the “United Republic of Tanzania,” was formed in 1964 when Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged after gaining independence from Britain in the early 1960’s. Bordering the Indian Ocean between Kenya and Mozambique, it reflects the most incredible tribal diversity in Africa as it is home to approximately 120 tribal groups, from the red-clad Masai tribes on the Serengeti plains to the Muslims in Zanzibar’s Stone Town. Both Swahili and English are widely used.

Tanzania possesses some of the most interesting natural highlights of the region: Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, is situated in the mountainous North-East; Tanzania shares Lake Victoria with Uganda and Kenya; there are the exotic spice islands of Zanzibar; and the world famous Serengeti National Park. Tanzania is home to some of the oldest archaeological finds, including fossils of early humans found in an area in northern Tanzania referred to as "The Cradle of Mankind.” These fossils and bones, including the oldest known ancestral human footprints, are estimated to be over 3 million years old.

This country offers some of the best wildlife-spotting opportunities on the continent: Wildebeest, lions, monkeys, antelope, zebras, elephants, cheetahs, gazelles, flamingos and more! Silver and white sand beaches, safaris featuring visits to tribal villages, volcanoes and exquisite national parks all make Tanzania a must-visit destination for anyone who wants to experience African life as it has remained for centuries.

Programs in Tanzania:

Mt. Kilimanjaro - Kilimanjaro National Park covers the entire region of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in the world, described by Ernest Hemingway as: “Wide as all the world, great, high and unbelievably white." The name is seen as a mystery but “Mountain of Light” is one of the several possible translations. To climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, at 19,340 feet, is an adventure for fit travelers. There are several routes to the top, ranging from five to ten days in length. Hikers will pass through rainforests, alpine meadows, perfectly-shaped volcanoes and semi-desert land before reaching the snowcapped peak, called the “Roof of Africa.” Seeming to stretch over half the continent, it is surely a breathtaking sight to see.

Zanzibar - Referred to as “Spice Island,” Zanzibar lies off of Tanzania's north coast, and has lured travelers for centuries. With influence from the Persians, Indians and the Omani Arabs who historically based their livelihoods around Indian Ocean trade, the Spice Island is the biggest producer of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and other spices that make spice tours a popular excursion. You also can explore Zanzibar's magnificent east coast beaches or visit Jozani Forest, a tiny patch of pristine rainforest right in the center of Zanzibar Island and home to extremely rare species of animals. A must-see stop is Stone Town of Zanzibar, an old city relatively unchanged for 200 years, full of winding alleys and labyrinths, busy bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses, two former sultan's palaces and fortresses.

Serengeti National Park - The Serengeti is Africa’s most famous and largest national park and possibly the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world. Its name comes from the Maasai word ‘siringet’ meaning ‘endless plains’ and serves as a perfect description. During the annual 500-mile migration across the Serengeti, two million wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and other animals head across the plains towards Kenya. It is possible to set-up at one of the many park campsites or arrange mobile camping in some regions in order to optimize your sightseeing in the Serengeti.
