Study Abroad in Ghana

Study English Language & More

Ghana is located in West Africa with a surface area about the same size as America’s state of Oregon. This small country has a tropical climate year round and is geographically closer to the center of the world than any other country. Once known as the Gold Coast, Ghana finally attained independence in 1957 from the British Administration that held it captive for so many years. One of the most fascinating attributes of this country is that over 70 languages and major dialects are spoken countrywide with the official language of Ghana being English. Some of Ghana’s local languages include Akan, Ewe, Ga, Dagbani, Nezema and Hausa. Also, due to Ghana’s abundance of natural resources, the country has a better economy than the poorer African nations, yet still relies heavily on international aid. The population consists of several ethnic groups, the biggest of which is the Ashanti that was once a kingdom in Kumasi.

Kakum National Park & Assin Attadanso Resource Reserve - This site contains 350 km of lush evergreen forest where over 40 species of larger mammals and 200 species of birds call home. Kukum National Park also provides one of the last remaining habitats for six endangered animals such as the bongos and forest elephants. Many visitors can view the tops of the far-reaching trees when they embark on the park’s canopy walkway that is suspended 100 feet above the ground.

The W. E. Dubois Memorial Center - This is the center for Pan African Culture and was built in Accra in memory of the famous African-American scholar. W. E. Dubois spent his last years in the country’s capital and became a citizen of Ghana in the final months of his life.

Kwame Nkruman Mausoleum -The museum exists as the tomb of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkruman’s remains, the first president of Ghana. The museum was created to honor the president when he was taken from his original burial place, his hometown of Nkroful.

Larabanga Mosque - believed to be the first mosque of Ghana and one of the oldest mosques in Africa, this magnificent structure is a reminder of the history of the Islamicization in the Sahel. The mosque also serves as the entrance to the beautiful Mole National Park that was established in 1958 and covers an area of 4,840 km of swelling terrain.
