Study Abroad in Egypt

Study Arabic Language & More

Located in the northeastern corner of Africa, as the oldest tourist destination on earth, people have long been attracted to Egypt’s pyramids, the Sphinx, ancient Luxor and the River Nile. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Israel and the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south and Libya to the west, this country is a juxtaposition of modern along with traditional life. Nearly all of Egypt is desert, but the small part that isn't - the valley of the Nile River - is vital to the nation (95% of the population lives within a few miles of the Nile's banks). The attractions of the country are not only the monuments of the Nile Valley and the souks (bazaars), mosques and madrasahs(building(s) used for teaching Islamic Theology) of Islamic Cairo, but the natural wonders of the Red Sea, Sinai, and the Eastern and Western deserts: fantastic coral reefs and tropical fish, dunes and rockscapes- plus ancient fortresses, monasteries and rock art. Egypt has an overwhelming display of art and architecture accumulated from centuries of successive Islamic dynasties.

Programs in Egypt:

Luxor- Built on the site of the ancient city of Thebes, this temple is one of Egypt's prime tourist attraction. It was built by Pharaoh Amenhotep III (1390-1352 BC) on the site of an older temple built by Hatshepsut and added to by Tutankhamun, Ramses II, Nectanebo, Alexander the Great and various Romans. Excavation work has been under way since 1885.

Graeco-Roman Museum- This museum contains relics that date back to the 3rd century BC. There's a magnificent black granite sculpture of Apis, the sacred bull worshipped by Egyptians, as well as an assortment of mummies, sarcophagi (a stone coffin, often inscribed or decorated with sculpture), pottery, jewelry and ancient tapestries. Another highlight is one of the few historical depictions of the Pharos of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Great Pyramids- Located in a section of Cairo called Giza, the Great Pyramids were one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Despite the crowds that visit every year, they are still a truly overwhelming sight. They have survived the rise and fall of great dynasties and conquerors, and share the flat desert surrounds with the Sphinx and a number of smaller pyramids and temples.

Mount Sinai- This awesome peak is revered as the site where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God.

Valley of the Kings- These secretive tombs of New Kingdom pharaohs were planned to preserve their mummies and funerary impedimenta for eternity. While most failed the test, their dramatic shafts and phantasmagorical murals are truly amazing.
