Learning French abroad in Montreux, Switzerland is one of many language immersion programs offered by AmeriSpan. Although small in size in comparison to its European neighbors, Switzerland more than makes up for this fact with its breathtaking mountains, interesting mix of cultures and culinary delights. Surrounded by Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein, it has a large German-speaking population to the north (about 66%), and smaller French-speaking area to the west (18%) and Italian to the south (10%). In the isolated mountain valley areas, mainly in Graubunden, a fourth language called Romansch is spoken by about 1% of the population. The majestic Alps, which cover approximately 60% of the country’s land, are famous for climbing, skiing, snowboarding, biking, hiking and other fun activities. Swiss cuisine borrows its culinary traditions from German and French cuisines. Some commonly eaten foods are rosti (crispy, fried and shredded potatoes), meat or cheese fondue, and raclette (cheese that is melted and then served on boiled potatoes with or without meats, gherkins and vegetables) to name only a few.
