Past Participants Who Studied Italian in Venice

Karen H.: My experience at AmeriSpan was a first in language study abroad. For me there were no expectations as to what the program would entail. My hope and expectation was to gain some pragmatic use of the language, which would enable me to interface with people in a connected and communicative way. The program provided this way beyond my imaginings. The extracurricular activities, especially the cooking class with Marina, were delightful and invaluable. The regulation of using only Italian in the classroom seemed daunting at first. But as the days passed, I began to actually think in Italian, overhear and understand many parts of conversations in the piazza, and acquire a relationship with Italian that had nothing to do with English, my native tongue. Italian became the verbal mediator of my actions and experiences. The teachers were excellent...intelligent, competent, engaging, and entertaining.
