Volunteer/Internship Application Process

Online Application Process

You can use our Secure website to register for a volunteer/internship program.  In order to do so, you will need the following:
- A current resume/CV in Microsoft Word format
- A valid credit card (Mastercard, Visa, AMEX or Discover)
- Two references who will complete the online reference form
- Click here to complete online application

Applying for Volunteer Placement

Send the following application materials in one envelope at least 2 months before your Spanish classes will begin:

  • AmeriSpan Volunteer & Internship Application - click here to download a PDF version
  • Deposit ($250 for Part-time Volunteer, $350 for Volunteer-only and Full-time Volunteer and $550 for Internships)
  • 2 reference letters either academic or professional
  • Typed responses to essay questions (included with application)
  • Detailed resume in English
  • A recent photo any size (unless applying online)

Process After You Submit Your Application

After we receive your application materials, we will contact you to set-up the informal telephone interview. During the telephone interview we will discuss your placement choices, the current available opportunities and the types of housing associated with the various placements. For those at an intermediate level or higher, part of the interview will be conducted in Spanish.

We will inform you of placement specifics within about 4-5 weeks after the telephone interview. You will receive a confirmation statement, "Need-to-Know" country factsheets and additional pre-departure information in the mail. After full payment and all missing information (e.g., airline arrival particulars) are received, a final confirmation will be mailed. Check these confirmations carefully to make sure that everything is correct. If there is an error, contact us immediately. Important Note: Positions are limited and the application process can be competitive. If we are unable to place you we will notify you and refund your placement fee. The placement fee is non-refundable once we have obtained a placement for you.

Start Dates

Participants must start their language program on the first Monday of any month. The volunteer placement will begin directly after the language component is completed. There is a two month minimum application deadline. (Helpful Note: Many placements, especially those providing free housing, are filled months in advance)

Tips on Applying

  • Be as flexible as possible with the type of work you are willing to do, the date you are willing to start and the countries in which you are willing to be placed.
  • Make sure that you only apply for positions for which you are qualified.
  • Don't leave out any details on your resume. Be sure to include all travel experience, certifications, specialized course work, hobbies, etc. The "one page rule" for resumes does not apply here!
  • Be clear, thoughtful, and honest about your reasons for wanting to participate. Writing the essay answers is a good opportunity to think things through. Please do not mention a specific organization, unless you are only applying for one placement.
  • All application materials must be sent at the same time in the same envelope.
Important Note: Although this is an unpaid position, please consider it a job. Please dress appropriately and recognize standard business etiquette (be on time, be respectful of superiors, etc.). This is a serious commitment. Please reconsider if: you have pending graduate school acceptance, are waiting to hear from a job, are considering this a "work vacation," have known family issues at home, etc. Please schedule all independent travel, extended trips and family/friends visiting you in country to occur after your work commitment has ended. Scheduling time off during your placement is not appropriate.
