This children's home is dedicated to helping children in Oaxaca with special needs. The orphanage was founded in 1947 by a visitor who decided he needed to provide for the children of Mexico's second poorest state. Ever since then, the home has been providing food, clothing, education, medical attention, and physical therapy for all children in need.
There is a diverse mix of children, as Oaxaca is home to several indigenous cultures, such as the Zapotec, Mixteco, Miji, Mazatecho and Nauhtl. The children, coming from remote and impoverished mountain villages, typically only speak their native dialect.
Volunteers will be in direct contact with the children, playing with them, assisting with homework, and organizing games and activities. In addition, participants will help with mealtimes, general cleaning, and any other daily errands.
Work Schedule: Hours between 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Location of Placements: Oaxaca
Lodging: Homestay
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 21 years.
- Minimum commitment: 4 weeks.
- Minimum Spanish level: Low-Intermediate
- Provide love, care, and attention to the children.
Important Things to Consider:
- The project is a 15 minute taxi ride from the lodging (about $1/day roundtrip)
Other Comments:
The maximum number of volunteers that this organization accepts is 3-5.
