Hispanics and Terrorism
The Bilingual America teacher and administrative staff is comprised primarily of Hispanics who grew up in Latin American countries. Most of them have come to the United States to find a better life and better opportunities. Over the few days following the attacks, I had the opportunity to speak with several of our people. I was intrigued that almost to the person there was fear, doubt and dissillusionment. Why? The reason is that many of them LEFT their own countries to get away from the daily threat of crime and destruction. They felt safe here in the United States. People from Nicaragua, Cuba, Colombia, El Salvador, and even Mexico who have left their countries in droves due to civil, political or economic unrest. As you know, most of these countries have, or are presently experiencing attacks on civilians from totalitarian groups. The comfort and security that these people have felt in the United States is presently gone. It has been replaced with a "this can't be happening HERE too" feeling. There are also a few other fears that many Hispanics have that I would like to express to you: 1. The fear that some unknowing North American might mistake them for a person from the Middle East, thus, making them susceptible to discrimination that goes beyond the normal levels of discrimination that many Hispanics tolerate. 2. The fear that some North Americans will simply become "soured" against people from other countries. That some people will think, "we really need to keep other people out of this country." Let them deal with their own problems. 3. The fear that the borders will now be severely tightened. Perhaps they have dreams of bringing other family members and friends to the United States for refuge. There is now a questioning of whether or not that will happen. It is a fact of life, that not only Mexicans come into the United States across the border. Many people from many different countries come over that border. Obviously, that will now be a much more controlled situation. If you employ a significant portion of Hispanics who are new in the country...heads up! There may be a decrease in the flow of people. Many Hispanic Americans will gladly risk their lives to defend our freedom in the new "War on Terrorism." I ask you to be judicious and see each individual for who he or she is, and not grow sour on all "foreigners."
