Demographics, Hispanics and... YOUR Life!

In the good ol' USA, we added an additional 2.5 million people to the population roles in the year 2000…of those 2.5 million, 45% were of Hispanic origin. In other words, we added more than 1.1 million Hispanics to the country last year. There are now around 35 million Hispanics in the country, or roughly 13% of the entire population. There are more Hispanics in the U.S. than African-Americans.

The average age of a Caucasian person in the United States is now 38.4 years, the average age of the Hispanic person in the United States is 24.8 years old. Now, which people are going to have more babies and where will the population increases continue to be seen? The answer is obvious, the Hispanics. You know, those people who are always speaking Spanish.

Recently, (May 9, 2001 to be exact), you may have seen the front page headline in the USA Today newspaper that said, "If you don't speak Spanish, you might be left behind." Well, my friend, that is, in fact, the case. All over the country, both large and small companies are scrambling for qualified bi-lingual staff members to manage, supervise, and sell to the Hispanic person.

Are you in or out?

Here are a few more numbers for you to ponder…

39.1% of all Hispanics in the U.S were born outside of the United States.
60.9% of Hispanics in the U.S. were born within the United States.

The Hispanics who were born within the United States are (or will be!) educated in the same educational system as you and I, they do (or will!) understand the United States system of business, and are (or will be!) your chief competition for great jobs in the future. And guess what…they speak both Spanish and English well! Do you?

This is why USA Today said that if you don't speak Spanish, you might be left behind. I will add only one thing to what they said, and that is this…if you don't speak Spanish WELL, you might be left behind.

It is not enough to simply "get by" with a few phrases and instructional commands. You must learn to speak Spanish well, if you want the inside track for the best jobs that will be available in the 21st Century.
