Money Matters for Teenager Study Abroad

Parents often ask us, "What type of spending money should my child bring on their study abroad trip?" Our answer is a combination. We recommend your child bring a debit or credit card, cash, and travelers checks. They should have at least $100-$200 in US cash while traveling in case of an emergency. Most programs locations have ATM machines where students can withdraw cash as needed. If there are no ATMs, Visa and Mastercard cash advances are available at local banks. Although travelers checks can be more difficult to use, we still recommend they bring some in case your child happens to lose their wallet or purse.
AmeriSpan's Tips:
  1. Visa Buxx is a prepaid debit card for teens, which parents can add money to and manage online or over the phone.
  2. Keep a copy of the numbers of your child's travelers checks.
