Latest on H1N1 (Swine) Flu

Updates as of May 20, 2009:
  • It is now apparent that the Swine Flu panic was way overblown as the CDC is now saying the swine flu is milder than expected and encouraging US public schools to re-open and imposing no travel restrictions unless you have existing respitarory problems OR the panic is called for if you read the WHO reports.
  • There are 9 deaths in the USA - a Mexican toddler who was sick and came to the USA for treatment and a Texas teacher who may have had "chronic health problems" and health officials are saying the flu "might" have contributed to the other deaths.  So it sounds very similar to deaths associated with regular flu strains which contribute to 36,000 deaths in America each year.
  • However, there is no built in immunity to this strain and it may mutate and lay dormant in the summer until Flu season starts later this year. May mutate, may lay dormant - the operative words.
  • WHO says the official death toll in Mexico is now at 29, still well below initial estimates of 100-170 deaths
  • The Mexican Government and Health Officials have announced the crisis is pretty much over but they remind people to stay home when sick and wash hands frequently. President Calderon and Mexican Health Secretary estimate that life in Mexico will return to normality very soon (1 or 2 weeks). The following changes have been directed to recover normal life before the panic:
    1. Re-opening of Public and Private universities and High schools this week. The rest of the schools (in all levels) will open next week.
    2. Re-opening of restaurants, malls and stores, cinemas, theaters, and recreation areas.
    3. Re-opening of federal and local public offices as well as any commercial activities.
  • Very few cases were discovered where most of our schools are located, for example - no cases in the entire State of Guanajuato.
  • No reason to cancel, delay/postpone or change programs going anywhere. However, if you want to cancel, AmeriSpan's Money Back guarantee and flexible cancellation, postponement & change policies make this hassle-free.  We don't need a reason and we have waived all fees if you want to cancel, postpone or change any program in Mexico.
