Top Undiscovered Programs

Overview

We would like to introduce you to undiscovered locations that are highly recommended by our own staff. See below OR click to see other Top Lists

Guanajuato, Mexico

In 1993 AmeriSpan’s founders visited Guanajuato for the first time, which quickly became one of their favorite destinations. Everyone who has been there since agrees! The city has many subterranean passageways and narrow, winding streets that make it truly unique. Because of its university, it has a youthful atmosphere, which can also be felt in its cafes, restaurants and shops. The friendly locals and extraordinary city layout make it both inviting and fascinating for students and independent travelers alike. Guanajuato continues to be a highly recommended destination by AmeriSpan's staff. Study Spanish in Guanajuato

Cuenca, Ecuador

Every AmeriSpan student and staff member who has ever been to Cuenca loves this program! The staff, the families, the teachers are incredibly friendly and the city itself is a gem. It offers the best of old and new with its historic colonial section and the more modern neighborhoods just across the river. It is one of Ecuador’s prime centers for intellectual life as well as cultural heritage. Relatively undiscovered by English speaking tourists, Cuenca offers an excellent opportunity to learn Spanish. Sucre, Bolivia

In 1999, AmeriSpan felt that Sucre was the perfect place for a Spanish school. It was reminiscent of another favorite, Antigua, except it had not yet been discovered by tourists. The town today is still not on the major tourist maps, making it an excellent location to practice Spanish with some of the most hospitable locals. It has beautiful colonial architecture and the university attracts intellects from all over the country. Study Spanish in Sucre

Bamberg, Germany

AmeriSpan added Bamberg as a location after a staff member came back from studying there. Of all the locations she visited, it was her favorite place in Germany and continues to be a favorite for those who go. Perhaps its small size keeps the tourist population down, while those who do travel there find welcoming people and lots to do and see. Its architecture has made it one of the most romantic cities in Germany and UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage site. Study German in Bamberg

Quebec City, Canada

While most French students don’t think of traveling to Canada to learn French, everyone who ventures there for language immersion returns very impressed with the level of immersion offered. While Montreal is clearly a bilingual city where you can get by on English if you want, Quebec City is most definitely a French-speaking city. And visiting Vieux Quebec makes one feel like they have traveled to 18th century Europe! Study French in Quebec City

Valencia, Spain

Valencia is the third largest city in Spain, so it’s often forgotten that it’s on the beach. You can get the city life you crave here without the expense and tourists of Madrid and Barcelona. Valencia is a great place to have gourmet paella with fresh seafood or to enjoy Spain’s famous discotecas. See a bullfight, or simply sit by the sea. You’ll love the weather, the laid-back atmosphere and, of course, the beach! Study Spanish in Valencia

Salvador, Brazil

We think the setting of medium-sized city of Salvador is ideal for a language program, although the optional Samba, Capoeira and Bahian cooking classes may have something to do with it! It also doesn’t hurt that the city is situated on the beautiful beaches of Northern Brazil. Study Portuguese in Salvador

Coronado, Costa Rica

An AmeriSpan staffer visited this program recently, and came back raving about it! She said it was like going to a small town where you quickly got to know the locals, but it is still close enough to Heredia or San Jose to go out at night. She also noted that the student mix was more international, where most Costa Rican schools seem to be crowded with English-speaking Americans Study Spanish in Coronado

Kiev, Ukraine

Students interested in improving their Russian level have a great alternative option in Kiev. The cost of living is much less here than in St. Petersburg or Moscow. Additionally, the program is offered for as short as a week, where our other Russian programs require a minimum of two weeks. It is a great option to experience both Russian language and learn more about the Ukrainian culture, the fall of the Soviet Union and more! A fascinating study in how far a people can come in only 20 short years, Kiev offers ancient through modern architecture, sporting events, skiing, hiking, swimming and more. You don’t have to travel far to find a quaint Eastern European village that this area is famous for. A great place to practice your language skills and learn about the culture as well. Jaipur, India

The sight, sounds, smells and tastes of India are bound to delight and/or leave you in sensory overload. Jaipur, known as the ‘pink city,’ is a favorite among our staff who have visited. This fascinating and well-planned city has much to see, most especially palaces: Amber Palace, Jal Mahal, and Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds). We are happy with the feedback from volunteer placements, although we must make it clear that conditions of the lodging and at the projects will be very basic. This is partially what makes India a “traveler’s paradise”. True travelers know that adapting to a new way of life, including sleeping and plumbing, is part of the fun! Come discover India, where we offer the opportunity to study Hindi language alone, or followed by a volunteer project in social work, education or healthcare. Learn Hindi in Jaipur, India or Volunteer in India

Montreux, Switzerland

AmeriSpan’s current Vice President visited Montreux and called its views nothing short of spectacular. The town of Montreux is nestled between the Lake Geneva bay and the snow-covered Alps, creating a picturesque setting. Outside class, students can enjoy their surrounding by taking a walk along the lake or visiting the one of numerous small villages around Montreux. The natural environment surrounding Montreux also makes sports very popular recreational activities. In the summer, enjoy swimming and sailing on the lake. The surrounding mountains provide scenic hiking in the summer and excellent skiing conditions in the winter. Anytime of the year, Montreux is a must for French immersion! Study French in Montreux

Cartagena, Colombia

Colombia is still uncharted territory for many Americans; but more and more people are beginning venture here. Cartegena is one of the most popular cities in Colombia and a great place to start for those making their first trip to the country. With beautiful beaches, a colorful colonial setting, volunteer projects and an active nightlife, there is something for everyone. At this small school, students receive lots of personalized attention and great instruction. Host families are friendly and some say Colombians speak the purest Spanish. Travel tip: Lunch at school is delicious and usually under $4. Study Spanish in Cartagena
