This is a public state university. It is the oldest institute of higher learning in the country. The enrollment is over 10,000 students per year and the university offers a diverse selection of degrees and specialties. The university is located in the city of Quito, about 30 minutes from the language school.
Volunteers in this placement typically conduct English and/or French classes to the university students. Usually the students are studying tourism. Administrative personnel at the university may also be attending the classes. Volunteers are exposed to a lot of Spanish and have the opportunity to meet many local students through this work. Many volunteers arrange for intercambio experiences with students and staff outside of class time in order to exchange languages and cultural experiences.
Work Schedule: Volunteers mainly work in the mornings. The daily schedule varies based on class times.
Location of Placements: Quito
Lodging: Hostal (shared room, no meals). Homestay available at extra cost.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Minimum commitment: 16 weeks.
- Minimum Spanish level: High-Intermediate
- Native English and/or French skills.
- Must speak good English.
- Interest in international exchange.
- Classroom experience preferred.
Important Things to Consider:
- Good exposure to Spanish and the local community.
