What to Bring & Donations
What To Bring
As you probably know, one of the major social concerns in most of Latin America is poverty, and many of the medical settings where you will observe/assist are serving the needs of this large segment of the population.
For all SALUD standard programs, you should bring your our own scrubs, gloves, booties, caps, masks, stethoscopes, HPE crib sheets, etc. These may be needed if you perform physical examinations, make rounds and/or go into OR. Participants from previous SALUD programs had to provide these for themselves because the local hospitals and clinics were on tight budgets.
Donations
AmeriSpan makes financial donations to most of the clinics, doctors and other organizations where you will be observing. However, it is also recommended
that you bring medicine and medical supplies
to donate to these organizations as well.
The donations for each location vary,
please click on the appropriate link
below to download the PDF list for the
location that you will be
attending. As we receive more
information from the different
locations, we will be adding additional
donation lists.
Since all locations do not yet have a
complete donation list, the following is
a sample list of the typical types of
supplies:
- Gloves
- Scrubs
- Hair nets
- Shoe covers
- Sterile gauze pads
- Band-aids
- Stethoscopes
- Needles
- Suture kits
- Gowns
- Lp kits

Making A DifferenceSince the beginning, AmeriSpan has been active in “making a difference.” Over the years, we have participated in numerous projects including rainforest preservation, literacy projects in Hispanic communities, and aiding Latin American health-related organizations.
For the last few years, AmeriSpan’s efforts resulted in more than $250,000 worth of medical supplies reaching needy communities in Latin America. We make this happen in three ways including sponsoring ocean containers of supplies; encouraging our participants to bring donated goods with their checked
baggage; and making direct cash donations to various international relief organizations.
