The United States government is encouraging people to learn strategic languages

The United States government is encouraging people to learn strategic languages. Strategic languages include Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, and Russian, all of which are offered for study by AmeriSpan Study Abroad (note: Hindi is only offered through our volunteer programs in India).

a) The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) is funded by the Department of State's Educational and Cultural Affairs Youth Programs Division, and is being implemented by a group of organizations led by the American Councils for International Education. This merit-based program for American high school students will fund approximately 550 students during 2009 and 2010 to study overseas in a strategic language.

b) The Critical Language Scholarship Program is sponsored by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC), and will offer intensive summer language programs in critical need foreign languages for summer 2009. The programs are available to U.S. citizens that are undergraduate, Masters and Ph.D. students. There are also programs for foreign language teachers who specialize in strategic languages. The CLS Program is part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a U.S government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages.

c) The Language Flagship, a federally-funded effort, is a component of the National Security Education Program (NSEP) at the U.S. Department of Defense. The Language Flagship has both domestic and overseas programs, with emphasis on changing the way Americans learn languages. There are programs in China, Syria, Egypt, Korea, Russia, Tajikistan, and India.
