Study Abroad in India

Studying Abroad in India is available in a variety of different forms.

India Overview

The jewel of South Asia, India enjoys a rich cultural past and present. As one guidebook succinctly puts it "Nothing can fully prepare you for India." This subcontinent is home to more than a billion people and is full of extremes: Snow-capped Himalayas and miles of tropical coastlines; Early morning sun glinting off of the Golden Temple in Amritsar and sunsets seen from a houseboat in the backwaters of Kerala. One of the world's largest foreign purchasing powers, India provides the second largest workforce in the world. Home to four of the world's main religions- Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism- India is known for its lavish and unique style, detectable in everything from music and dance to food and dress.

Bollywood - The largest film industry in the world, Mumbai (affectionately nicknamed Bollywood) cranks out an estimated 900 feature films per year. Tours of major studios are available if arrange in advanced. You are able to visit the BollywooDrome and get a behind the scenes glimpse of a new movie in production.

Taj Mahal - Considered by some to be the finest example of Mughal architecture, the Taj Mahal was constructed as a monument from Emperor Shah Jahan to his deceased wife Mumatz Mahal. Workers totalling more than 20,000 men built this spectacular mausoleum over an astonishing 20-year period. Master craftsmen were brought in from as far away as Europe. The details are executed exquisitely, from screens of marble to the thousands of inlaid semiprecious stones.

Goa - The initial draw of Goa is, of course, the pristine paradise beaches lining the Arabian sea. However, once you arrive, the intriguingly intense influence of colonial Portugal will keep you around. Few other places in India are as attached to their former colonial overlords. In Goa it is common to see crucifixes hanging next to pictures of Shiva, and Portuguese is still a common language for older Goans.

Darjeeling - Located on a steep mountain ridge in West Bengal, Darjeeling offers an escape from the heat and a fantastic panoramic view of the Himalayas. You can explore Victorian mansions and churches as well as Buddhist and Hindu temples. The narrow streets are full of vibrant handicraft shops and traditional Indian and Tibetan restaurants. Hiking opportunities abound, as well as the opportunity to sample freshly brewed Darjeeling teas.
