AmeriSpan offers Volunteer placements in Tanzania

TANZANIA, in East Africa, possesses some of the most interesting natural highlights of the region: Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, is situated in the mountainous North-East; Tanzania shares Lake Victoria with Uganda and Kenya; there are the exotic spice islands of Zanzibar; and the world famous Serengeti National Park. The population consists of more than 120 ethnic groups, from the red-clad Masai tribes on the Serengeti plains to the Muslim communities in Zanzibar‘s Stone Town. Both Swahili and English are widely used.

Zanzibar - Referred to as “Spice Island,” Zanzibar lies off of Tanzania's north coast, and has lured travelers for centuries. With influence from the Persians, Indians and the Omani Arabs who historically based their livelihoods around Indian Ocean trade, the Spice Island is the biggest producer of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and other spices that make spice tours a popular excursion. You also can explore Zanzibar's magnificent east coast beaches or visit Jozani Forest, a tiny patch of pristine rainforest right in the center of Zanzibar Island and home to extremely rare species of animals. A must-see stop is Stone Town of Zanzibar, an old city relatively unchanged for 200 years, full of winding alleys and labyrinths, busy bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses, two former sultan's palaces and fortresses.

The volunteer program takes place in Zanzibar in a town called Jambiani. Local schools need volunteers to teach their students, as well as some staff members, English. In addition to the teaching, volunteers can help out with special projects in the schools, including raising environmental awareness.

NOTE: In accordance with the requirements by the Tanzanian authorities, if anyone is volunteering for longer than 4 weeks, they will need to purchase an additional volunteer visa once they are at the (volunteer) project. This will cost travelers an extra USD 100 and they will need to bring the additional cash and 6 colored passport/ID photos with them as well as a color copy of their passport. The Zanzibar Project Manager will assist them with arranging this visa once they are at the project.
