AmeriSpan offers Volunteer placements in India

INDIA , the second most populated country in the world, is set at the southern tip of Asia. It is a vivid kaleidoscope of landscapes, magnificent historical sites and royal cities, misty mountain retreats, colorful people, rich cultures and festivities. Its history dates back 5000 years and you can visit temples, palaces and museums to satisfy even the most demanding traveler. Although English is widely spoken, it is not one of the 9 official languages.

Volunteer projects are located in and around Delhi and Jaipur, the two most vibrant and beautiful cities of India. We offer projects at local orphanages, women’s groups, health centers, local schools and NGOs working on different social issues. If you are a medical professional you’re very welcome to help doctors who work with the most impoverished people who don’t have access to health care. You can teach English, assist at an adult literacy program or raise awareness of HIV and AIDS.

PLEASE NOTE: You should plan to arrive in Jaipur on the Tuesday of the first week of your program. Activities and orientation will take place on Wednesday. Meals begin Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, depending on your time of arrival. Your program and lodging will end on Monday.

Airport pickup is available from 10 AM on the starting date of the program (Tuesday, counted as Day 1) until 10 AM on the next day (Wednesday, day 2).

WORDS of CAUTION: While most people adjust to India’s vast differences within one to two weeks of arrival, India is one of AmeriSpan’s most challenging locations for students in terms of culture shock. You will encounter extreme heat and crowds of people, animals, sights, sounds, smells and chaos. In a country where half a billion people live below the poverty line, our programs in India are for the more flexible traveler. You should be expecting a high level of culture shock and be ready to embrace it. Specifically, the lodging here is extremely basic. Some students have access to western-style toilets, while others offer Indian-style facilities. There are fans but no air conditioning, and students are expected to clean up after themselves. Part of the experience of visiting and volunteering in India is really getting to understand the people you're helping. Students and volunteers should be prepared for the extremely basic conditions offered.
