In 2007 this ecological center was started in Wang Thong, in the Phitsanulok province to focus on its environmental projects and to raise environmental awareness in Thailand in general. The ecological center thus strives to educate Thai people about the importance of saving natural resources and preserving biodiversity.
According to estimates of the World Wildlife Fund, in Thailand there are only between 2,000 and 3,000 elephants still living in the wild. This number is shrinking steadily, as wild elephants need to compete with villagers for land with casualties on both sides every year. At the same time, domesticated elephants roam throughout Thailand with their mahouts (trainers), begging for food in cities often by performing tricks for tourists.
Here at the Elephant sanctuary the elephants are living in their natural habitat, and with our participants they have a chance to venture into the forests and fields on more frequent occasions. Domesticated elephants differ from wild elephants (in Khao Yai National Park, plenty are still roaming) and cannot live on their own in the wild anymore.
During the week, you’ll be able to help mahouts in the Elephant camp as they take care of the elephants and throughout their daily exercises. During the week, you will also learn about the place of elephants in the culture in Thailand, their needs and the current social problems that have arisen around them. Daily tasks include washing and feeding the elephants, gardening and working with the people of the center.
