Women's Project
Tanzania Volunteer Placement

Though the Masai culture is one of the largest tourist attractions in Tanzania, the Masai people themselves do not benefit financially, especially the women. A local non-governmental organization is currently running programs to provide a positive economic condition to the Masai women. Here women are trained to make traditional Masai crafts, such as handcrafts, bread, clothing, and other goods, which are later sold at market. Part of the profits of these sales go directly to the women. This is a great project for those curious about the Masai culture.

There are eight women's group in different villages throughout the area, and volunteers will travel to several villages per day. There are many works to become involved in. Artists and non-artists alike can train women in crafts such as bead and ornament making. Native English speakers are needed to teach informal language classes, so that the women can converse with tourists directly to sell their products. Those with marketing backgrounds can develop strategies for the women to sell their products in national and international markets.
