Home for elderly people. The home is run by a religious order with very friendly nuns that love having volunteers around. There are 4 separate wards:
The general women’s ward, with 72 women, run by Madre Soranita.
The women’s infirmary, with 32 women, run by Madre Mariana.
The general men’s ward, with 86 men, run by Madre Soledad.
The men’s infirmary, with 33 men, run by Madre Soremilia.
Various kinds of work related to the care of elderly people. Personal attention is provided by serving meals, cleaning, bathing, dressing, cutting fingernails and hair as well as assisting with the laundry and organizing recreational activities such as playing ball with them, drawing, walking around with them, games like bingo, dancing, singing, etc. The elderly people like
having foreigners around and start smiling as soon as you walk in the door.
Work Schedule: Flexible. Volunteers usually work 9am - 1pm daily. Help is sometimes needed on weekends.
Location of Placements: Cusco
Lodging: Shared apartment. Homestay available at extra cost.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Minimum commitment: 4 weeks.
- Minimum Spanish level: Mid-Intermediate
- Related skills and experience.
Other Comments:
The maximum number of volunteers that this organization accepts is 3.
