Community After School Program Peru Volunteer Placement

This is a non-profit organization in Cusco that works with children and families with minimal economic resources. The organization is a combination of about four centers throughout Cusco that work with a total of about 80-100 children and adolescents between the ages of 7 and 16. Children attend the programs offered by this organization in the afternoons while their mothers are working in the markets. All four of the centers are located near the local markets in town. The program offers academic support in the form of tutoring, homework assistance and English classes. Children also have time for recreation and other educational games.
Volunteers help the students with their homework, tutoring and English classes. Volunteers also assist with the social activities offered by the center. Volunteers with special interests and skills are encouraged to initiate activities accordingly. For example, volunteers with creative skills can organize art activities. Likewise with sports, music and other activities can be arranged.
Work Schedule: Varies. Usually 4-6 hours/day.
Location of Placements: Cusco (outskirts of the city)
Lodging: Shared apartment. Homestay available at extra cost.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Minimum commitment: 4 weeks.
- Minimum Spanish level: Mid-Intermediate
- Related experience and interest.
- Enthusiasm and compassion for children.
- Experience with low-income organizations.
Important Things to Consider:
- Most of these organizations are located in or near the poorest sections of town.
