This is a home for elderly people. It is run by a Catholic order of nuns. There are four different wards:
The general womenīs ward, with 72 women-run by Madre Soranita.
The womenīs infirmary, with 32 women-run by Madre Mariana.
The general menīs ward, with 86 men-run by Madre Soledad
The menīs infirmary, with 33 men-Madre Soremilia.
For those volunteers with a medical background, a general medical placement is available. You will be shadowing the nurses and doctors until you are comfortable to take on individual patient duties. Patientsī medical needs include: administering of medicine, checking blood pressure, taking blood tests, performing general physicals, counseling on better health maintenance techniques, writing patient histories and updates, etc. It is also possible to work in the physical therapy clinic.
Work Schedule: Full-time, usually 9am-1pm. (Can vary. Full-time Monday through Friday, sometimes nights and/or weekends.)
Location of Placements: Cusco
Lodging: Shared apartment. Homestay available at extra cost.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Minimum commitment: 4 weeks.
- Minimum Spanish level: High-Intermediate
- Certification in Medicine or Nursing.
Important Things to Consider:
- Although well funded, conditions may appear basic compared to retirement homes or hospitals in more developed countries.
- A small percentage of the elderly residents are very ill. Please prepare yourself mentally.
- Run by a religious organization.
- Donations requested.
