The Penitentiary Center of Granada was founded in 1980 under a new revolutionary vision of what prisons should be in terms of human development and social re-integration efforts. The Penitentiary Center holds about 450 to 500 inmates. About 20% of prisoners are women and a group of adolescents.
Those volunteers who are qualified will help prisoners with psychological, medical and dental care. Other tasks may include: Teach English; Teach Spanish for illiterate people; Sports instructors; Vocational work: Areas of work include weaving, cooking, dancing, drawing, jewelry and other arts and crafts.
Work Schedule: Varies. Schedule to be determined on-site. At least 20 hours/week.
Location of Placements: Granada, Nicaragua and surrounding area.
Lodging: Volunteer Residence including 3 meals/day
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Minimum commitment: 4 weeks.
- Minimum Spanish level: Low-Intermediate
- Strong preference given to those with experience in gynecology, nursing, psychology, and social work or similar career.
- 4th Year Undergraduate or Graduate Student of any focus
Important Things to Consider:
- Working conditions are very basic.
- Female volunteers will work with female inmates and male volunteers will work with male inmates.
Other Comments:
The maximum number of volunteers that this organization accepts is 6.
