HIV/AIDS Project
India Volunteer Placement

As compared to other countries, HIV arrived in India late, however this has not limited its recent impact. Infection rates in India have soared in the 1990s and have further continued since, estimating around 2.5 million people living with HIV/AIDS of India’s 1 billion inhabitants. While initially associated with sex workers and truck drivers, the epidemic is now affecting all sectors of India's society. In a country like India where poverty, illiteracy, and poor public health awareness are rife, the spread of HIV presents a daunting challenge. Moreover, of the 2.5 million HIV/AIDS patients, only a very small portion of these people receive adequate health care, and the social stigmas associated with the illness often make others hesitant to care and support the patients. Hospitals set up to care for HIV patients are in desperate need of additional financial assistance, medical resources and, most importantly, caring and motivated human support.

Volunteers will provide direct medical care and assistance to patients residing in a children's residential treatment hospital for HIV/AIDS and organize and lead creative recreational activities for children of the hospital. Volunteers will also engage in awareness campaigns regarding HIV/AIDS prevention by leading sessions to adolescent girls & women’s groups.
