Many women in India find themselves in need of help, due to poverty, social division, and superstitious beliefs. These women are typically poorly educated or divorced, which puts them at even more of a disadvantage. In an effort to give these women a new chance at life, several organizations have been created to not only protect these women, but educate them as well. Women participate in adult literacy programs and are taught useful trade skills, so that they may learn how to start a business or have a better chance of getting a job. This placement also strives to help rebuild self-esteem and promote a healthy, positive outlook.

Volunteers will teach English to the women 3-4 hours per day, as well as basic sanitation and health information. In addition, volunteers will teach the women helpful trade skills, such as sewing, tailoring, and beautician skills, so that they will be prepared for future jobs. Volunteers may organize extra-curricular activities, like singing, dancing, and art classes, and may also be expected to help write proposals and reports for the organization in English.
