This ambitious placement has three goals: to provide basic healthcare to those in rural areas; to decrease widespread diseases; and to improve the overall health of communities by providing educational programs. Volunteers with a medical background will assist local nurses in all aspects of clinical nursing and primary health care.

The volunteer's role depends upon past experience, education, and qualifications, but all work will revolve around assisting doctors and volunterring in various departments of local hospitals. Departments you might be able to visit include Gynaecology, Neurology, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Surgery. Participants may assist midwives, record patient information, change bandages, take blood pressure and other vital signs, etc. No matter what the specific activities, the most important thing is to educate the villagers about basic health care, but also educate yourself about different medical practices in other cultures.
