Cloud Forest Ecological Reserve

The Cloud Forest is located two and half hours north of Quito. The forest is home to over 450 species of bird and some very unique flora and fauna. Located within the cloud forest is a reserve which forms part of the bio-region of ‘El Choco’ one of the most important biological areas in the world for its high concentration of biodiversity. Its delicate ecosystem needs preserving in order to protect the plant and wildlife.

As a volunteer you will be living and working closely alongside the local community. In the first week, you will be working within the coffee plantation helping to clear, prune, plant and harvest. In week two, you will be working within the local school, teaching English to children. You can also organize extra activities for them after school, such as sports and games. In week three, you will travel to a nearby area in the jungle. The project assists a local community by clearing and maintaining an area of land alongside the river, which the community uses to grow crops, assisting them in becoming selfsufficient. Some basic construction work my also be required, for example building wooden constructions on which fruits and crops can grow. In your forth week, you can choose which activity you partake in based upon your preference from weeks 1-3. Throughout your stay, you can also get involved with teaching English to the children of your host family and surrounding homes.

Work Schedule: Schedule arranged on-site.

Location of Placements: 2 1/2 hours by public transportation from Quito (Northwest)

Lodging: Host Family (shared room)- very basic as most families in the area do not have much money. Three basic meals per day.


Requirements:
  • Minimum age: 18 years.
  • Minimum commitment: 4 weeks.
  • Minimum Spanish level: Low-Intermediate
  • Good physical condition.
  • Related experience.
  • Volunteers must take at least 1 week of classes in Quito.

Important Things to Consider:
  • Must be able to work with little or no supervision.
  • There may be no other foreign volunteers working at the same time.
  • Altitude is 1600-2400 meters above sea level.
  • Very basic accommodations: no electricity, no hot water, 25 minutes walking distance through woods from main area.
  • Remote area. Not recommended to walk after dark.
