This is an educational facility that is available to children and youth in Quito. It is an after-school center where they participate in educational activities, tutoring, and recreation. The project was started to offer minority and underprivileged children a place to go after school instead of being on the streets.
You can choose to work either the morning shift, 9am – 12pm with children, or the afternoon shift, 3pm until 6pm with teenagers as well as children. If you prefer you can dedicate your whole day to the center and help out during both sessions. You will have weekends off to spend as you wish. The kinds of tasks you can expect to get involved with include; o Assisting with homework o Creating fun and educational activities for the children o Helping during meal times o Teaching English o Accompanying the children to the hospital if necessary o Taking the children to the park for walks and games o Making special occasions, such as birthdays, a fun time for the children by organizing parties or outings o Making handicrafts with the children and then selling them to raise funds for the center o Providing a weekly volunteer report to the volunteer coordinator at the Academia to enable the consistency of volunteer work
Work Schedule: Varies. Generally 08:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday.
Location of Placements: San Jose just outside Quito (30min by bus)
Lodging: You will stay either at the student residence or with a host family. Host family
accommodation includes a private room, breakfast, dinner and laundry service.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Minimum commitment: 2 weeks.
- Minimum Spanish level: Low-Intermediate
- Experience with children.
- Creativity and patience.
- Willingness to take initiate and work independently.
