Comite del Pueblo is a low-income, marginalized neighborhood of Quito. In this neighborhood the parish has become very active in community services. This particular placement, started by the parish, is a program to which students can come after their regular classes and do their homework. It is mainly for students whose parents are not home after school to supervise them. There is a library and cafeteria for the children. Other services provided by this project are elderly care services and medical services.
Volunteers will supervise students and assist them with their homework. Typical subjects in which they need help are: Spanish, Math, History, English and Physical Education. Snack is also provided to the students. Volunteers assisting the elderly will work with them in painting, reading, dance, and manual work and also serve them lunch. Volunteers with medical training can assist in the clinic.
Work Schedule: Varies. Usually Mon-Fri, 09:00pm-12:30pm.
Location of Placements: Comite del Pueblo (20 min North of the school)
Lodging: Hostal (shared room, no meals). Homestay available at extra cost.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Minimum commitment: 4 weeks.
- Minimum Spanish level: High-Intermediate
- Experience working with children.
Important Things to Consider:
- As the duties depend on the current needs of the children, volunteers will need to be able to very flexible.
- Although this is a religious organization, the volunteer need not have any religious affiliation.
- Volunteers must be respectful in terms of dress & behavior.
