This museum is part of a national organization of museums in Costa Rica called The Museos del Banco Central. This organization researches the approach and representation of Costa Rican cultural identity through exhibits, collections, research, publications and educational projects. They focus on three main aspects: Anthropology, Visual Arts and History. In 1950, the Banco Central de Costa Rica began a collection of archaeological objects in gold to preserve the endangered patrimony. At the same time, it strengthened its numismatic collection and the acquisition of national pieces of art. The building is subterranean and has the form of an inverted pyramid. It is located in downtown San Jose, next to the National Theater, under the Plaza de la Cultura.

Volunteers assist the Museum Curator. The main responsibilities include planning and mounting of the Contemporary art exhibits. Volunteers will also participate in the administrative duties. Help is often needed in the Marketing department for various projects that may be going on at the time. An educational project is being planned for volunteers to give tours in English and/or in their native language.
