Bird Protection Program Costa Rica Volunteer Placement

This organization is a nature project focused around the restoration of scarlet and green macaws in the wild. The site has over 200 birds most of which are used for breeding and the babies are released into the wild. The birds live in several cages all over the site.
Working with the birds, monitoring and feeding them, making toys for them. A lot of fruit cutting & feeding. The babies need to be fed by syringe several times per day. There is also the opportunity to train some of the birds (a different species than the macaws) and take them to hospitals, and other sites to entertain people (for example to children's hospitals or to retirement homes).
Work Schedule: Varies. (full-day or possibly half-day schedule)Volunteers must work on Sundays but may have another day off.
Location of Placements: Rio Segundo (between San Joaquin & Alajuela)
Lodging: Nearby homestay includes meals and laundry.
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Minimum commitment: 4 weeks.
- Minimum Spanish level: High-Beginner
- Related interests/experience.
Important Things to Consider:
- Need to like working with big birds.
- Work starts very early in the morning.
- Volunteers must work at least 4 Sundays. Can arrive on the Saturday before you begin work or leave after work on your last Sunday.
- At least one week of language classes are recommended, in order to meet with the on site staff.
Other Comments:
The maximum number of volunteers that this organization accepts is 2.

For volunteers staying longer than a month, they may be permitted to move to a releasing site to volunteer there. Facilities at these sites are primitive.
