Established in 1992, the idea behind El Santuario Ecologico is to protect its 75 acres of forest. Today it is open to eco-tourism with the goal of preserving the forest and the wildlife found within. The sanctuary is a wildlife refuge run by a local Costa Rican family, which leads hikes on trails throughout the forest. On the trails there are beautiful lookout points, two big waterfalls, coffee and banana plantations, as well as many bird species and other wildlife.
Volunteers will help with trail maintenance and reforestation projects, such as seeding plantations.
