This organization works to assist the people living in various favelas (slums) in the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro. The favelas were established in the early 1900's and now the population is about 12,000. The Community Education Centers are non-profit organizations which offer full-time schooling and day care to about 400 children, ages 3 months to 14 years. There is also a small medical facility staffed by volunteer doctors that supports 1500 families. Children are accepted into the program based on need. The goal is to provide a solid education as well as moral and professional development and eventually transform students into influential agents of positive change in their communities.
Volunteers are needed to tutor, help with homework, teach English and to organize various educational and recreational activities such as art projects and sporting events. Volunteers will also be able to assist with any projects that are going on at the Educational Centers during the time that they are there.
Work Schedule: Varies. Schedule arranged on-site. Minimum: 10 hours/week.
Location of Placements: Cantagalo, Pavao, Pavaozinho (favelas, southern zone of Rio)
Lodging: Homestay
Requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Minimum commitment: 2 weeks.
- Minimum Portuguese level: High-Beginner
- Experience with very poor communities.
- Compassion and genuine interest in helping.
Important Things to Consider:
- These are some of the poorest communities in Rio. The work is challenging. the rewards of being accepted into the community are great.
