Casa de Adocao Rubens Colaco is an orphanage in Maceio for children who are sent by the State department of children and juveniles. It is divided into two parts: there is an area for kids ages 6 to 10 and the nursery, for infants and children up to 5 years of age. The older children go to school during the morning and in the afternoons they return to the orphanage to study, play and do other activities. The younger children stay at the orphanage all day.
Volunteers have the option of working with the older, younger or both groups of children. Working with the older children, the volunteer may develop art, recreational or another type of educational activity. If volunteers prefer to work with the younger group they will be changing diapers, bathing and playing with them.

Location of Placements: Maceio
Lodging: Homestay during classes, shared apartment during placement. Electricity is paid on-site for the apartment, approximately US$60-80 per person, per month if you run the A/C only when you're home, or US$340-400 if you run it all the time.

Volunteers must study Portuguese for 4 weeks (at own expense) prior to starting teaching position. Position available year-round.
