This placement is observation only. Observation will be performed in local hospitals and clinics (public or private), in health organizations, in specialized clinics or in doctor’s offices.
An example is the public hospital, which has been offering comprehensive medical services since the early 1960's. It is located away from the city center and the majority of the patients have few economic and medical resources. The hospital has 9 floors, about 250 staff members, about 1,000 patients per day and all standard departments except an emergency department. Some such departments include: diagnostic imaging, maternity, pediatrics, surgery and in/out-patient services. The doctors provide very personal care to all patients. There is a small cafeteria, a gift shop and a church on hospital grounds. The military provide daily volunteers for services such as security and check-in. Often there are visiting doctors and staff from other cities or countries.
Interns work in various departments depending on their interests and specialties. Interns will observe doctor/patient interactions and assist in basic duties.
