La Oreja de Van Gogh
While sitting in a bar in any city in Spain, you will notice the look of recognition in everyone’s eyes the minute a song by La Oreja de Van Gogh pops on. The group was formed in 1996 in the northern Spanish city San Sebastian but has managed to hook all of Spain on their music. Composed of five young Spaniards, the voice of the lead singer Amaia Montero is incredibly distinctive. When listening to the music of La Oreja it is clear how spontaneous they are and you really hear a group of friends having fun with their music rather than a more serious and contrived sound. On the third track of their most recent CD, El Viaje de Copperpot, Amaia draws you in with her voice as she sings about a past love and her memories. This CD is a great way to practice your Spanish as the words are recognizable, the music charismatic and in no time you’ll find yourself singing along!
