AmeriSpan Expands and Increases Discounts for Military Families
The liberties that the citizens of the United States enjoy are largely due to the sacrifices and efforts of the members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Individual men and women in uniform as well as their families face many hardships that average Americans cannot comprehend or relate to. These hardships include emotional troubles, long separations from loved ones, financial challenges and serious physical injuries. AmeriSpan wants to thank and reward these men and women along with their families for their efforts through a special military discount. “Too often the sacrifices these troops and their families make are not recognized or taken for granted. Although a discount can in no way equal what these heroes give everyone in America, we feel that our discount accomplishes two things. First, it will make it easier for veterans and family members of our service men and women fund a study abroad experience. Secondly, we feel that by offering the discount we help remind others who aren’t serving in the military just how fortunate they are,” explained John Slocum, AmeriSpan’s co-founder. The emotional and physical sacrifices of US troops and their families are well documented and understood by most Americans. However, the financial hardships encountered are often overlooked. Military families are utilizing food stamps at twice the non-military national rate. More and more military families are on welfare. Military reserve personnel have lost jobs and advancement opportunities because of repeated and extended deployments. The Military "Friend of AmeriSpan" discount is available for any AmeriSpan program including College Study Abroad programs eligible for academic credit (and GI Bill funds) such as the popular Barcelona Study abroad program, as well as any other AmeriSpan program. Immediate family members are defined to be children, spouses, siblings and parents of active or recently active military personal and reservists. In order to claim the discount, study abroad participants need to use the discount code “Military” when applying for a program and provide proof of their status (usually a copy of a military ID). AmeriSpan Study Abroad (http://www.amerispan.com) has been a leader in study abroad for more than 18 years with more than 35,000 past participants. With more than 100 study abroad, language-learning and volunteer programs worldwide, the organization offers programs for participants of all ages, language level and interests. Long an innovator in study abroad, the Philadelphia-based organization was recently named a finalist for the ‘Star Award’ for Best Agency in North America for the fourth consecutive year. AmeriSpan was honored to receive the award in each of the past 2 years. The industry’s prestigious Star Award is voted by organizations worldwide and awarded annually.
