Heredia Junior Immersion

Known as the Switzerland of Central America, Costa Rica has an abundance of natural beauty and is populated by a friendly, well-educated people. Costa Rica has obtained the highest standard of living in Central America by embracing democracy and disbanding its army. This small country is a paradise for nature lovers with national parks, jungles, volcanoes, beaches, and more water per square mile than any other country in the world, excluding New Zealand. However, the small pre-Columbian indigenous population was wiped out by diseases brought to the new world by the conquistadors.

Heredia (pop 50,000) is located 6 miles north of San Jose. The city and its surrounding areas provide all the conveniences of a medium-sized city in an environment which has escaped, to a large extent, the normal urban problems affecting the capital. The city has a surprisingly youthful and active feeling despite its small size. This is due to the presence of many young Costa Ricans attending the National University. Costa Rica’s famous coffee plantations surround Heredia where one can still see ox carts loaded with coffee beans.

School Facilities: The school facilities are located in a local high school and include indoor classrooms, computer lab, large gardens, a swimming pool, a soccer field, and basketball and volleyball courts. Students stay with a host family and breakfast and dinner are provided daily. Lunch is also included and will be at various local restaurants in the afternoon.

Activities/Excursions: Daily afternoon activities and weekend excursions are included. Examples include: dance classes, cooking class, visits to local areas of interest. In addition students have the opportunity to volunteer in public schools, in national parks, in an orphanage for girls, in a nursing home or they help in a recycling project via once a week service learning projects.
