Medical Spanish Program Overview

The SALUD Dominican Republic program is totally customizable, but starts at 2 weeks and includes 20 hours of general Spanish lessons and 5 hours of Medical Spanish lessons in the first week. In the second week, you will focus on clinical experience in one specialty area, which includes observation and also visits to other hospitals and/or clinics. Host family stay is also included for the entire program. If your Spanish is not Mid- Intermediate or higher, you should consider adding additional weeks of classes.

Additional Requirements for Application:
*Under the new seguro social laws in the DR, it is mandatory for all doctors to carry malpractice insurance. Every medical school has such a policy and they would give the student/organization a copy. The student has to send in this document prior to program start.
In case students cannot provide the copy of their school´s malpractice insurance, it is possible to add the student to the organization’s policy but the cost is US$100 for up to one year. There is no short-term plan to be found in the DR so far.
*In cases where the organization will place students with a public hospital, the organization needs to get written permission from Salud Publica and a security clearance. Some hospitals prefer to issue them a photo-badge also. Therefore, the students need to send their photo prior to program start (digital or scanned photo is fine).
*We also require your CV and transcripts. A placement exam and medical form will be sent to you with your initial confirmation. Due 6 weeks before your start date.
*Please see itinerary link for all requirements.

More About The Location

Known for its old Spanish ruins, beaches, and baseball players, the Dominican Republic is located about 600 miles southeast of Florida. It occupies two-thirds of Hispaniola, an island discovered by Columbus when he ran the Santa Maria aground on Christmas Day 1492. The island’s strategic position between the Panama Canal and Central and South America has made it a natural gateway to the Americas. Here one can hike on mountains, travel through lush jungle and semi-arid deserts, or enjoy the sea from white sand beaches. Despite a booming tourist industry attracted by the natural beauty, upscale casinos, and low cost of living, the country is still largely undiscovered today.

Santo Domingo is situated on the ocean, providing a beautiful vista while beaches suitable for swimming are located 45 minutes outside of the city. The bustling capital, with a population of 2.5 million, is heavily influenced by merengue, the national dance. Nestled amongst the new office buildings is Old Santo Domingo, with colonial charm and many interesting sites to see, like what is said to be the First Church of the New World and the resting place of Christopher Columbus himself.
