Information about Cusco, Peru (Click to view)
Once the capital of the great Inca civilization, Cusco is also home to magnificent examples of colonial architecture. The stone foundations of Inca temples are still visible in the colonial buildings in and around the city. Many international tourists are drawn to Cusco for its close proximity to the famous Machu Picchu ruins and the Inca Trail. Due to the high elevation, it is cold at night and cool during the day year round. However, this can be a great excuse to seek out the many Indian markets selling the beautiful wool sweaters and textiles of Peru. Surrounded by the wealth of its Inca history and offering the comforts of an internationally known town, Cusco truly is an exciting place to learn Spanish.
Peru shares borders with Ecuador, Columbia, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and the Pacific Ocean. The country has three distinct regions: a narrow coastal belt along the Pacific Ocean, the wide Andean mountains, and the Amazon rainforest. Although the coastal belt is a desert, that is where most of the population lives. Peru is renowned as the land of the Incas, but many great pre-Columbian civilizations flourished. Visitors can see the ancient ruins of the Inca capital of Cusco, and explore the lost city of Machu Picchu as well as ruins from a variety of other cultures, including the Nazca and Moche.
Participants: This program is open to groups of all ages.
