Originating in the Rio de la Plata region, tango has become one of the most romantic and seductive dances in the world. Learning the dance allows students to experience the Uruguayan culture in a new and enchanting way, while gaining a real discipline. Students study 4 hours of Spanish in the mornings 5 days each week and 3 hours of tango lessons each week.
The tango classes are run by a professional tango dancer in her studio, located just three blocks from the school. Students will receive one-to-one classes or can book classes with a partner. Total beginners are welcome, and will begin by learning the basic steps and understanding tango music. Experienced tango dancers will learn more advanced routines or related forms of dance such as milonga.
Beginners can expect to learn the basic steps of tango, a good tango walk and hold, how to lead (men) or interpret (women), and about the culture and music of tango. Students can also try the related dance form, milonga, which is like tango but quicker and more playful. Those with some experience will be able to improve their style, learn new steps and sequences, or simply dance for fun.
The teacher has many connections within the tango community in Montevideo and can advise students on where to watch or practice tango outside of class. No equipment is needed except for comfortable clothes and shoes: ordinary shoes or trainers are fine for beginners, but sandals or flip-flops are not advisable.
Information about Montevideo, Uruguay (Click to view)
Located on the Rio de la Plata, Montevideo (population 1.9 million) is lively and modern, yet more like a large town than a city. The people are mostly of European descent, as in Buenos Aires and Santiago. Nine sandy beaches stretch along Montevideo’s waterfront, and one is only 3 blocks from the school. The most popular beach resort is Punta del Este, a narrow peninsula between the Rio de la Plata and Atlantic Ocean.
The smallest Hispanic country in South America, Uruguay is bordered to the north by Brazil, to the west by Argentina, to the south by the Rio de la Plata, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Many believe the country’s wide sandy beaches are the best in the world, to which the invasion of the beach-loving Argentineans can attest. Safety, health standards, and political stability are among the best in Latin America.
Participants: Most are European, and the rest from North America. Many are university students, professionals and independent travelers of all ages.
