Montanita is the home of surfing in Ecuador, and known as one of the best sites in South America. October and November tend to see more rain, while December through July is more sunny. In spite of some rain, the temperature is warm and the surf consistent all year. Additionally, because the waves are smaller at low tide and bigger at high tide, the beaches in Montanita are ideal for all levels of surfers.
Over the last few years Montanita has been discovered as one of the premier beach towns of the coast. Its many diving sites and the nearby Isla del Plata make it known for its world-class diving. Although it's small, it is a booming beachside retreat attracting international travelers as well as an alternative Ecuadorian crowd. This is an ideal location to relax while practicing your Spanish with locals and meeting other travelers.
Ecuador was named for its position on the Equator and is bordered by Colombia, Peru and the Pacific Ocean. Not many countries as small as Ecuador have such diverse climate regions. This country has the tallest active volcano in the world, great white sand beaches, tropical rain forests, deep crevasses, colorful Indian markets and is well known for its social and political stability.
