Host School:
Learn Modern Standard Arabic, the fundamental Arabic language used in writing and formal communication, and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, the most widely-spoken and recognized of the many local colloquial types of Arabic throughout the Middle East.
Combine your study of Arabic language with the age-old art of calligraphy. In the first level, students will learn how to write each letter in the correct proportion, join identical and nonidentical letters and change the proportions of letters for artistic effect, and write a word or line by adding decorative motifs to balance and decorate the unlettered spaces.
An advanced class is also offered. In this level, students will learn how to write a simple sentence and study the accurate distribution of spaces between letters and words. You will write letters in many possible ways, use decorative motifs and designs to decorate a page, and enlarge and reduce the size of a sentence while maintaining the proper proportions.
Information about Cairo, Egypt (Click to view)
Cairo, Africa’s most populated city, has 16 million inhabitants. It may be the world's only city with monuments dating back to four different historical periods -- the Pharaonic, the Roman, the Christian and the Islamic. An overwhelmingly exotic mix of ancient and modern worlds, this city offers an incredible array of culture, leisure, shopping and nightlife. All the bounty of the East is here, in particular, the spices, perfumes, gold, silver, carpets, leather work, glass and mashrabiya. The city comes alive at night, which is the best time to shop, eat delicious Middle Eastern cuisine, or simply watch the world go by from a pavement cafe. You can dine in a floating restaurant on the Nile, sample an apple flavored shisha water pipe at a coffeeshop or see asian dancers and cabarets. Only about 6 miles outside of Cairo are the Sphinx and the Pyramids of Giza.
Located in the northeastern corner of Africa, as the oldest tourist destination on earth, people have long been attracted to Egypt’s pyramids, the Sphinx, ancient Luxor and the River Nile. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Israel and the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south and Libya to the west, this country is a juxtaposition of modern along with traditional life. Nearly all of Egypt is desert, but the small part that isn't - the valley of the Nile River - is vital to the nation (95% of the population lives within a few miles of the Nile's banks). The attractions of the country are not only the monuments of the Nile Valley and the souks (bazaars), mosques and madrasahs(building(s) used for teaching Islamic Theology) of Islamic Cairo, but the natural wonders of the Red Sea, Sinai, and the Eastern and Western deserts: fantastic coral reefs and tropical fish, dunes and rockscapes- plus ancient fortresses, monasteries and rock art. Egypt has an overwhelming display of art and architecture accumulated from centuries of successive Islamic dynasties.
Participants: Mostly European with some North Americans.
Other: Level I is available at all regular course Start Dates. Level II is available at Special Start Dates only.
