This course is ideal for students who want to combine their study of the Mandarin language with the age-old art of Chinese calligraphy. Chinese calligraphy is the art of turning Chinese characters into expressive images conveying the abstract beauty of lines and rhythms. Calligraphy is said to a reflection of a person's emotions, moral integrity, character, educational level, accomplishments in self-cultivation, intellectual tastes and approach to life. In this course, students will learn the basic stokes necessary to create beautiful characters.
Information about Beijing, China (Click to view)
An ancient capital of six dynasties, Beijing is one of the most famous historical and cultural cities in the world. Temples, parks, and historic sites all sing wonderfully and powerfully of the dream that was Old Cathay, but in the same hallowed space there's a new Beijing taking shape. Just outside the exquisite walls of Beijing's monuments, steel and concrete are steadily replacing silk and carved wood.
China is more than a country – it is a whole different world, from shop-till-you-drop metropolises to the epic grasslands of Inner Mongolia, with deserts, sacred peaks, astounding caves, and imperial ruins in between. Along with the stark contrasts comes stark beauty; there is plenty to see if you can wade through the crowds.
Participants: Mostly from Europe and the US. Average age 35.
Other: If there are no other Calligraphy students, calligraphy lessons will be private and reduced to 5 hrs a week.
