Information about Sucre, Bolivia (Click to view)
Sucre is the beautiful judicial capital located in the Andean highlands. It is known as the “White City of the Americas” due to its numerous colonial buildings, all of which are painted in white and topped with shiny red tile roofs. Set in a valley surrounded by low mountains, Sucre is small (pop. 150,000) so it is very easy to explore on foot. A university town, known as the center of learning and progressive thought within Bolivia, Sucre has museums, a lively central plaza, shops and restaurants. Sucre and its nearby villages have sizable indigenous populations that maintain their customs and colorful dress.
A land-locked country that straddles the Andes, Bolivia is known as the Tibet of the Americas. From the snow-capped peaks of over 21,000 feet, the land descends through stark plateaus to the semi-tropical jungle. Its phenomenal landscapes, colonial architecture, indigenous cultures and the legacy of its ancient mysterious civilizations offer an extraordinary travel experience. In addition, Bolivia has large cities and remote villages; Lake Titicaca, the highest inland sea; and a fascinating culture and history. While there are relatively few tourists, it is quite easy to travel throughout the country.
Participants: Half are European and half are North American. The majority are students and independent travelers of all ages.
